Here is what we wish would happen with our voting process:
1) Open primaries. No more having to declare a party when you vote.
2) Eliminate the electoral college. Whoever receives the majority of the vote, wins.
3) Eliminate the superdelegates. Whoever receives the majority of votes gets the nomination.
4) Make primaries all on the same day. Let's really level the playing field.
5) Have the media and pollsters stop manipulating the elections. Many a good candidate has been shut out because they weren't the "darlings" of the press and pollsters.
6) Limit the amount of money candidates can raise and spend on their campaigns. Think how many students could have been sent to college or poor families fed and clothed with the money that was spent on this year's presidential campaigns.
7) We know this one is really a stretch. How about candidates being honest in their campaigns?
Quit pandering to voters. Take a stand on an issue, show some backbone and don't flip-flop.
Most voters are smarter than you think.
8) Formation of new political parties. It's hard to separate the Democrats from the Republicans, especially in Washington. They are all tax and spend politicians who are selling out the American middle class. Just ask anyone who has had their job outsourced.
9) Eliminate poll watchers. If your candidate is as good as the party thinks he is, he should win without this spy tactic (this would be difficult for the Democrats in Lake County).
10) More referendums. The voters should be able to decide for themselves if they want an increase in the sales tax, a county income tax or an open primary.
11) Right to Recall an Elected Official. If California can do it, why can't we? If an elected official is not doing the job he was elected to do, voters should have the right to recall him without having to wait for the next election or he gets indicted.
Are these wishes achievable? We sure hope so, but they won't happen until we citizens wise up and take back our government.
